Access to Heritage Project: August 2011

The Access to Heritage project was developed in 2005 to research into access to interpretation in museums and other heritage type venues for people with learning disabilities. The project aims to find out why people with learning disabilities don't visit Hertitage venues and how we can make their visits positive and memorable experiences. The Access to Heritage forum which includes representatives from three day centres and a school, have made a film about our work, produced a report made our own multi sensory exhibition and worked with designers on St George's Hall Liverpool new visitor centre.The project is lead by the forum members who have become experienced 'access consultants', regularly visiting museums, galleries and old buildings using a variety of methods to get feedback. We are currently working with Speke Hall, The National Wildflower Centre and National Museums Liverpool on the new Museum of Liverpool.
